Pay Attention to the Pink Slip
Not all pink slips bear bad news. The pink “Homestead Verification Form” that is enclosed with your property tax bill is very important and can save you and your clients thousands!
A bill in the legislature has required that these forms be mailed out with the property tax bills in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and they must be completed and returned by every homeowner who wishes to claim a homestead deduction on their property. Property owners have until January 1, 2013 to return the card. Why? These cards and the legislation requiring them are aimed at cracking down and preventing homestead fraud.
This form has not been widely publicized and can easily be overlooked as bureaucratic paperwork so please pay extra attention when opening your property tax bills and inform your clients to do the same.
A Few Commonly Asked Questions:
I didn’t find the form in my property tax bill?
Those some counties may choose to, they are only required to include the form to taxpayers already claiming the homestead deduction.
If I don ’t fill out by January 1, 2013, will I automatically lose my deduction?
If you don ’t complete the form by the deadline, you will receive a final notification letter from the county and your deduction could be removed on your 2012-pay-2013 property tax bill.

The Association has received 2 calls this week from Members stating a listing they have for sale has appeared on Craigslist as being for rent. In both cases the consumer who was interested in renting the property saw the for sale sign and contacted the Listing Office. Craigslist does have a warning for the consumer about potential scams on their site and what actions to take to avoid being a victim. They also have the following information about who to contact if your listing is being used as part of a scam. The Association’s recommendation is to contact the authorities as outlined below and contact Craigslist and request the listing on their site be removed. You should also let the Association Office know of the problem so we can continue to keep the Membership updated on any future developments.

We all know that life as a REALTOR can be extremely busy and hectic.
REALTORS pretty much are on duty 24/7! There is precious little time for many things let alone to attend a general membership meeting. Our board of directors make a great effort to encourage our members to attend but we find attendance to be lower than what we would like.
While attendance during our CE nights is good, we would like to see a few more of you during our meetings. We only have 10 meetings a year and they normally will fall on the second Tuesday of the month.
Hopefully we will see more of you at our meetings with our new promotion which will begin with our October Meeting.
The promotion is as follows: Attend a general membership meeting and you will be eligible to place your business card in a drawing. You must attend the meeting in order to be eligible. CE only attendees are not eligible and members may not enter business cards for other members who are not in attendance.
What is the prize????
Free association dues! Yes, you heard right!
The promotion will begin October 2010 and ends September 2011. At the October 2011 meeting, one business card will be drawn and that person will have their Board Dues paid by the association. Both REALTOR members and Affiliate Members may participate in the promotion.
So if you haven’t attended one of our meetings recently, it may be a good time to start. Remember, our meetings offer an opportunity to network with fellow REALTORS and affiliate members. Four times a year we also offer Continuing Education which is free of charge to our members.
Hope to see more of you in the future!!
(Don’t have a business card? No worries—there will be blank business cards available to those who do not have business cards!)
There are no general membership meetings during the months of July and November!

Power outages and power surges will interfere with the internal workings of your Display Key Cradle. After a power outage/surge, you might find that your key seems to be updating, but when you try to use the key, it will give you the message “Key expired, update now.” You also might find that your battery is suddenly low. While the cradle seems like it is working, it is actually draining the key battery and failing to update the key.
To correct this problem, simply unplug the cradle from the power outlet and phone line. On the back side of the cradle is a small reset button.
You need to take a paper clip and push down on the reset button. This will usually correct the problem. Try to make it a habit of resetting the cradle every time you know there has been a power outage or surge.
Recent Storms have affected power in our area. On June 18th and then again on June 23rd violent storms hit our area and left thousands of homes without power. Most likely many cradles were affected as well and all cradles should be reset in order to function properly.
If you have any questions regarding the reset of your cradle, please contact the Board Office at 219-324-8120!

The purpose of the REALTOR of the YEAR Program is to recognize and award REALTOR members in our local association for effort expended in the interest of their fellow REALTORS, their community and the real estate profession and who exemplify the highest level of professional conduct in serving the real estate needs of the general public.
The program involves each participating local association selecting a member who has contributed most to the advancement of his/her profession and the community at large during the CURRENT YEAR.
The 2010 REALTORS of the Year will be honored at a banquet at the Fall Conferences in Indianapolis, Indiana. The State REALTOR of the year will be chosen from those names submitted by the local associations.
A nomination form can be found on pages 5 and 6 of this newsletter or click here. They will also be made available at the Board Office. Forms must be submitted by July 25, 2010. Forms received after that date will not be included in the selection for REALTOR of the Year. Please remember that it is not necessary to complete all sections for a form to be submitted. The REALTOR of the Year committee will review the nominations received by July 25, 2010 and select a recipient from the forms received.
If you have any questions regarding the REALTOR of the Year program, please contact the Board Office at 219-324-8120.
